Call for papers

27th OLOMOUC DAYS OF RUSSIAN STUDIES
Russian Studies in the Time of War II: Decolonizing Thought in Language, Literature, and Culture
11–12 September 2025

We invite papers in the following sections:

1. Imperial and Colonial Legacy in Russian Language, “Russian” Literature, and Culture

The section will be devoted to the analysis and presentation of (case) studies focusing on experiences with the imperial and colonial nature of Russia, geographical and political dependence in the Eastern European region, internal colonization, relations between the centre and the periphery, and resistance to hegemony and chauvinism.

2. Current Realities and Prospects for Decolonization

This section will address the revision of narratives about Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Baltic region, and the Caucasus within European Russian studies. Proposed papers may cover topics such as the decolonization of knowledge, the future and challenges of decolonial discourse, decommunization, desovietization, derussification, and issues of Russocentrism (e.g., in the context of area studies or East-European Studies).

3. Teaching Russian: Future and New Challenges

Teaching the Russian language at all levels of the education system faces several challenges. These include both local issues, such as the future of Russian language instruction in primary and secondary schools, and global issues, such as how to teach Russian while addressing the legacy of Russo-centric thinking or how to use the language in a time of international isolation.

4. Roundtable: Emigration 5.0

What is the daily reality of people who left Russia after February 2022? What bureaucratic or personal obstacles do they face while building a new life? What would need to change for them to even consider returning? These and other questions will form the core of the discussion focused on the current wave of emigration from Russia.

The conference will be held in-person from the 11th to the 12th of September 2025 at the Faculty of Arts, Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic.
